Diploma candidates are required to select one subject from each of the six subject groups. Three of the six courses are to be taken at the higher level (HL). The other courses are taken at the standard level (SL). HL subjects require three courses to complete, and SL subjects require two courses.

In order to receive the International Baccalaureate Diploma, a student must:

Successfully write IB examinations in the six subject areas

Successfully complete Theory of Knowledge

Successfully write an Extended Essay (which is defined as an in-depth study of a limited topic within a subject area)

Complete the Creativity, Action and Service requirement (150 hours)
Upon successful completion of the IB program, students will receive both an IB diploma and an OSSD. Students who wish to take IB courses in grades 11 and 12 will be tracked in grade 9 and10. Students actually start the programme second semester of grade 10. Students will take grade 11 French (FSF/FEF3U1S) and grade 11 Religion (HRT3M1S) in the second semester of grade 10.

Theory of Knowledge (ToK)
The TOK course, a flagship element in the Diploma Programme, encourages critical thinking about knowledge itself, to try to help young people make sense of what they encounter. Its core content is questions like these: What counts as knowledge? How does it grow? What are its limits? Who owns knowledge? What is the value of knowledge? What are the implications of having, or not having, knowledge?
This additional requirement of is taken during years 1 and 2 of the IB Diploma Programme. It is tied to each of the courses that the student has to take as mandated by the IBO.

Admission Requirements

Highly motivated students who are in good standing academically in each subject will be considered as I.B Diploma Pogramme candidates

Interested students are contacted in June of their grade 8 year.

Admission for students from other secondary schools will be considered on an individual bases as space permits.

Students in grade 9, who expressed interest in the program, will be monitored by the IB coordinator.
Students from their grade 8 feeder schools need only indicate an interest in the programme on the Nicholson Catholic College course selection form that they complete in March.
